Welcome to the Ashton-in-Makerfield University of the Third Age web site! The University of the Third Age is a world wide organisation, founded in 1972 in Toulouse in France. There are around 750 branches in the UK, each one autonomous and develops its own character according to the wishes of its members. Typically, each U3A holds a regular monthly meeting with a speaker. NEW - click here for a list of 2012 speakers. Interest groups hold their own meetings for the members to learn new skills and to pass on their own knowledge and experience. Groups can start from an individual who wants to share a particular interest or learn more about it, such as painting, bird watching, family history, gardening, languages, walking and origami. In fact the list is endless. Members share experiences to pursue learning not for qualifications but for fun. No qualifications are needed and none are awarded. Latest newsletter now online, click here to download. THIRD AGERSFIRST AGE - childhood and dependency SECOND AGE - career and family THIRD AGE - fewer full time commitments and freedom to enjoy life and pursue new interests. 'A CLUB FOR THOSE WHO HAVE STOPPED LIVING TO WORK AND WHO HAVE STARTED WORKING AT LIVING' Ashton-in-Makerfield & District U3A is a member of the South West Lancs U3A network.Within this network we are hoping to share any spaces/vacancies existing in the interest groups. There are certain subjects that are under subscribed. If your group would welcome more members please advise Winnie Burns . Members visiting other U3A interest groups will only be charged the interest group fee, but interested parties must produce a current membership card with number. This option includes social events, theatre groups and holidays etc.Any information such as flyers can be passed on to the other groups in the network. Winnie Burns |
